Debt Relief Company Practically Offers a Clinic in How Not to Collect Debt
According to the FTC, United Debt Counselors LLC: 1) exaggerated how much money customers would save; 2) used documents that looked like they were official documents from a bank or an attorney; 3) claimed typical customers would have their credit card debt cut in half; 4) claimed a high success rate and that customers rarely dropped out of their program; 5) set up "special savings accounts" they claimed only consumers could control, but which were used to draw out monthly fees by the company; and 6) sent to consumers notary publics to show a video and collect signatures rather than knowledgeable sales reps. Otherwise, they ran a tight shop. [3/8/17]
